Ju-Youn Park and Lucy Shuker both survived final set tiebreaks on Thursday as the women’s, men’s and quad singles quarterfinal line-ups were decided on the first day of the 2018 Birmingham Canadian Classic, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, in Mississauga, Ontario.

Korea Republic’s Park began 2018 having never met Natalia Mayara. But after being beaten in straight sets by the Brazilian at the BNP Paribas World Team Cup in May, Park ensured that she gained the upper hand this time, wrapping up a 61 67(6) 76(5) victory to earn a last eight meeting with top seed Sabine Ellerbrock.

Second seed Shuker, meanwhile, had to find her way back from a set down against Japan’s Momoko Ohtani, eventually earning a 36 62 76(3) win. For the second year I a row Shuker joins Ellerbrock and Japan’s Manami Tanaka in the last eight after the latter’s 61 61 win over USA junior Joanna Nieh.

With Ellerbrock having a first round bye, there were also straight sets wins for third seed Giulia Capocci of Italy and fourth seed Dana Mathewson of USA, Charlotte Famin of France and Britain’s Louise Hunt.  Capocci faces Tanaka next, while Mathewson plays Hunt and Shuker takes on Famin in a bid to reach the semifinals,
