Kyu-Seung Kim goes into Saturday’s quad singles semifinals at the Birmingham Canadian Classic, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, as the only unseeded player left in the event after the former world No. 6 ended the title defence of Australia’s Heath Davidson in Friday’s quarterfinals in Mississauga, Ontario.

Currently world No. 12, Kim dominated the closing stages against world No. 4 Davidson, the Korean completing a 36 63 60 victory to set up a semifinal Canadian against fourth seed Robert Shaw. While Kim ensured that there would be no repeat of Shaw’s 2017 semifinal against Davidson, Shaw ensured that there would be no all-Korean semifinal with a confident 61 61 win over Myung Je Kim in the last eight.

Davidson won the 2017 final at the expense of world No.1 David Wagner and top seed Wagner remains firmly on course in his bid to return to the final in Mississauga after defeating Japan’s Shota Kawano 62 63. There is guaranteed to be a USA player in the final, with Wagner now facing third seed Bryan Barten after the world No. 7’s 62 61 quarterfinal victory over Chinese Taipei’s Chu-Yin Huang.
