Joachim Gerard, Michaela Spaanstra and Kyu-Seung Kim claimed the men’s, women’s and quad singles titles when the 24th Plock Orlen Polish Open, part of the UNIQLO Wheelchair Tennis Tour, drew to a close on Sunday.

With eight of the world’s leading men’s players vying for title honours at Roland Garros, world No. 9 Gerard was in fine form as he earned his own clay court success in Plock, dropping just two games and recording two 60 60 wins in three matches on his way to the men’s singles final.

With ten men’s singles champions crowned at the ITF 2 event before this year, the 2018 edition would crown an 11th men’s champion after Gerard denied Austrian eighth seed Martin Legner 60 62 in the quarterfinals. All three of the other quarterfinals went to three sets as Stefanos Diamantis of Greece reached the last four of and ITF 2 Series for just the second time, defeating third seed Ben Weekes in straight sets before beating fifth seed Daniel Rodrigues of Brazil 62 26 62.

The bottom half of the men’s quarterfinal draw included two Korean players. But after beating one of the tournament’s former multiple champions and home favourite Tadeusz Kruszelnicki in the second round, Spanish fourth seed Martin de la Puente managed to make a fine recovery against seventh seed Ho Won Im to advance 06 63 62. And Korean fortunes proved no better in the other quarterfinal as Argentinian second seed Agustin Ledesma held on in one of the tournament’s longest matches to overcome Sang-Ho Oh 76(7) 67(10) 61 after three hours and 29 minutes.

A second three-set contest for both de la Puente and Ledesma ended in de La Puente prevailing 36 62 61, but the 18-year-old provided lesser resistance for Gerard, who went on to claim his second ITF 2 title of 2018 63 62.

Second seeds Diamantis and Rodrigues edged a deciding match tiebreak to book their place in the men’s doubles final against top seeds Gerard and Steffen Sommerfeld, but once again Gerard came out on top, ending the tournament with two titles after he and Sommerfeld took the doubles final 63 64.

Spaanstra regains women’s singles title

After winning her first ITF 2 Series women’s singles title in Plock in 2014, Spaanstra capped a memorable week by regaining the crown.

Less than a week after being part of the Dutch team that won its 30th BNP Paribas World Team Cup women’s title – and with World Team Cup teammates Diede de Groot and Aniek van Koot enjoying success at Roland Garros – Spaanstra beat Argentina’s Andrea Medrano 63 60 and Korean third seed Ju-Youn Park 61 76(4) to book her place in the singles final.

Argentinian fortunes proved much brighter in the bottom half of the draw as fourth seed Maria Florencia Moreno made it back-to-back wins this season against Brazilian second seed Natalia Mayara, winning their all-South American semifinal 64 64. But, just as Gerard did in the men’s singles final, Spaanstra dropped just five games in her final, easing to a 63 62 victory to repeat her 2017 quarterfinal win over Moreno in Plock.

While Spaanstra also completed the tournament with singles and doubles titles, gaining her third doubles victory in Plock since 2015 proved more of a challenge. However, ultimately Park and Spaanstra sealed the title 63 16 (10-2).

Kim claims first singles title since 2016

With Korean players contesting the Plock Orlen Polish Open for the very first time, Kyu-Seung Kim claimed victory in the quad singles, earning his first title since 2016.

The former world No. 6, a quarterfinalist on home soil at both the Busan Open and the Daegu Open, produced his best results of 2018 to date when earning a 63 61 quarterfinal victory over current world No. 5 Lucas Sithole and a 60 62 win over former world No. 1 Nick Taylor before defeating Brazilian second seed Ymanitu Silva 75 63 in the final.

However, the Korean challenge ended against top seeds Silva and Sithole in the semifinals of the quad doubles and Silva and Sithole went on to defeat Taylor and Mika Ishikawa 75 62 in the final.
